NOTCHING CUTTER -Plays a vital role in Impact Testing
The attention to the surface finish and geometric accuracy of notches in test samples is of paramount importance if accurate results are to be obtained. In many polymer applications, apart from studying the Izod or Charpy impact strength, the effects of stress concentrations in design can be very important.
Once confidence in the results of notched test samples has been established, the notch sensitivity of the material can be studied by scaling the notch size, particulary the radius in the base of the notch form. It has been shown that there is a very close relationship between the material's capability to withstand stress concentrations and the notch sensitivity.
The picture shows a notching cutter with a variable cutter and traverse speeds to select the ideal cutting conditions for each material type. The Cutters are optically ground and lapped.
